More On Spring Farm
Spring Farm is a suburb in the Macarthur Region of Sydney, located within the state of New South Wales, Australia, and is part of Camden Council. As of the 2016 census, it had a population of 4,307. The suburb is situated on the east side of the Nepean River and was predominantly farmland with a winery and an electricity substation. Recently, it has been undergoing suburban redevelopment.
The area that is now Spring Farm was likely originally inhabited by the Tharawal people, with the Darug and Gandangara peoples also known to have lived in the greater Camden area. Early interactions between these Indigenous groups and British settlers were initially cordial but became strained as land clearing for farming began, leading to conflict and the eventual retreat of the Indigenous people after 1816.
In 1805, wool pioneer John Macarthur was granted 5,000 acres in the Cowpastures area, which after clearing, was used for farming for the next two centuries. The farmland of Spring Farm has been subdivided into housing blocks as part of Sydney’s suburban expansion.
Spring Farm is accessible via the Camden Bypass and has bus services operated by Transit Systems, with the nearest railway station being Macarthur. The suburb features Springs Lake, a man-made lake with a timber boardwalk and picnic facilities, and the Spring Farm Dog Park, which opened in July 2016.
Governance of Spring Farm falls under the south ward of Camden Council, represented by several councilors. It is part of the federal electorate of Division of Hume and the state electorate of Camden. The suburb’s transformation from rural farmland to a residential area reflects the ongoing urban development in the region.
