Changes coming to 40km/hr rule

by | Sep 19, 2019

The protection of emergency services personnel when working on the side of the road is absolutely crucial, so the NSW Government introduced new road rules 12 months ago requiring passing motorists to slow down to 40km/h when blue and red lights were flashing. After a 12 month trial, some really sensible amendments have now been made to that rule. The main points are that, from 26 September:

  • Drivers will no longer need to slow down to 40km/h on roads with speed limits of 90km/h or over
  • Drivers will continue to be required to slow down to 40km/h on roads with speed limits of 80km/h or under
  • The rule will be expanded to include tow trucks and breakdown assistance vehicles, which are displaying yellow flashing lights while stopped on the road.
